Steve Vai是八九十年代最杰出的吉他演奏家之一。少年时他曾师从于Joe Satriani，后进入Berklee音乐学校学习，并于19岁那年来到洛杉矶。Steve Vai是Frank Zappa的铁杆乐迷。他曾以实力证明自己能够演奏Zappa绝大多数的作品，并且有过耳不忘之功，从而加入Zappa乐队的机会。Zappa对Steve Vai在专辑Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch中表现的评价为：\"令人瞠目的吉他手\"。

　　1984年Steve Vai发行了个人处女专辑Flex-Able，其中不难看出Zappa和Satriani的痕迹。其后他先后加入了Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake, 和 Alice Cooper乐队，并于1986年在电影Crossroads中饰演了一个吉他手。
